National Bank of Greece-Mitropoleos Branch
The design refers to the structural strengthening of the existing building consisting of basement, ground floor and 4 upper floors. The structural system is a typical concrete building with slabs, beams and columns, while some old existing masonry walls along the building limits were maintained and used as structural items. The enhancement of the bearing capacity was decided following damages to the building, proven also through a thorough analysis.
New strong concrete walls were added alonf the left and right side of the building, together with lateral walls forming thus concrete cores of high capacity. Thus the interior columns were "unloaded". Although some interior elements were also reinforced by gunite. The foundation of the interior columns was enhanced, while the new concrete walls rest on micro-piles, mainly due to soil substance, which is of low capacity as it is near the ancient river Iridanos.
